"The astronauts left an eight million dollar car on the moon, and
brought home a bag of rocks. That's the same deal I got when I traded my car
in at Cal's used car dealer."
– Pat Buttram
Boalsburg, Pennsylvania – BearManor Media will soon be releasing the
biography of one of America's most gifted funny men. The book, entitled Pat
Buttram, the Rocking Chair Humorist, is scheduled for a September 30,
2006, release. Buttram is most well known for playing Gene Autry's yodel-y
voiced sidekick in film, television, and radio and for his portrayal of Green
Acres' hilarious con-man, Mr. Haney.
"My purpose in writing this book is to show the world the Pat
Buttram that his peers knew," says biographer Sandra Grabman. "Sure,
his characters were hilarious, but did you know that Pat did much of his own
writing? Not only that, but he often wrote material for other comedians,
too." So brilliant was his wit that he was known as the best after-dinner
speaker in Hollywood. People were absolutely charmed that such sophisticated
observations were delivered in such a genuine Alabama country-boy manner. To
make us laugh was Buttram's ultimate pleasure.
Someone as beloved at Pat Buttram should have had an easy life, but it
didn't work out that way. His first marriage caused him much pain and the loss
of his child. Later, he was so severely injured when a prop exploded that, if
it had not been for his pal Gene Autry, he would have died. Even so, Buttram's
strength, bravery, and self control in real life could rival that seen in any
John Wayne movie.
